You’ve just had a baby (or you’re counting down the days)…    and someone says:

“You should book a newborn shoot.”

But no one tells you how to choose the right one.

Lifestyle? Posed? Studio? At home?

How are you meant to know what works best for your family?

As a newborn and family photographer based in Clitheroe, Lancashire, I get asked this all the time — so this blog is here to walk you through your options and help you find the session that actually feels right for you.

Because you deserve more than just lovely photos.

You deserve an experience that feels calm, relaxed and true to you.

Lifestyle Newborn Photography (In-Home)

This is for you if:

You want something natural and relaxed

You’d rather stay home and not worry about packing a changing bag

You love the idea of documenting real moments in your own space

What it looks like:

I come to your home — no studio lights, no rigid posing — just gentle direction and natural light. You cuddle your baby on the sofa, feed when you need to, and we capture your family just as you are in those early, tender days.

It’s all about connection and emotion, not perfection.

Studio-Style Newborn Photography

This is for you if:

You love those dreamy, styled images of baby wrapped up and sleepy

You want soft, timeless portraits in a controlled setting

You like the idea of someone else taking care of everything

What it looks like:

You come to a studio setting (or a mobile setup, if available). Baby is gently posed in soft wraps, baskets or blankets. These sessions are a little longer, allowing time for feeding, settling and creating that sleepy, curled-up magic.

This style can include sibling and parent shots too — and everything is styled for you.

Outdoor Newborn + Family Session

This is for you if:

You love being outdoors

You want a more relaxed, slightly older newborn session (4+ weeks)

You want natural light and movement in your images

What it looks like:

You bring baby, I bring my camera — and we go for a gentle walk, settle on a blanket, or wander through a field near Clitheroe. It’s perfect for families who want something a little different and don’t mind a bit of fresh air.

It’s less about newborn poses and more about the whole family being together.

So, which one is right for you?

Here’s the truth:

There’s no one right way to do this.

It comes down to what feels good for you in this season.

If you’re still healing and want comfort — in-home lifestyle may be perfect.

If you love timeless, curled-up portraits — studio-style might be your dream.

If you're craving fresh air and movement — outdoors could be your thing.

Not sure? That’s ok. I’m here to talk you through it.

A few things all my newborn sessions have in common:

  • No pressure. No perfection.
  • Lots of time for feeding, settling and breathing.
  • Gentle guidance (because I know it can feel awkward being photographed).
  • A focus on connection, love and storytelling.
  • Based in Clitheroe, travelling across Lancashire.
