If you’re expecting a baby and starting to think about newborn photos, one of the first questions that usually comes up is:

“When should I book our newborn session?”

And honestly — it’s such a good question.

Because between appointments, nursery planning, and just getting through pregnancy, it’s hard to know what needs doing now and what can wait.

So let me gently guide you through it, based on years of photographing newborns and supporting parents through this exact stage.

The Short Answer: During Pregnancy

The best time to book your newborn photography session is while you’re still pregnant.

Most parents book sometime in their second or third trimester. This doesn’t mean we lock you into a fixed date before your baby arrives — because babies rarely follow calendars.

Instead, what we do is pencil your due date and stay flexible.

This gives you peace of mind knowing everything is organised, without adding another thing to think about once your baby is here.

How Newborn Sessions Are Scheduled

I don’t book newborn sessions like regular appointments.

Instead, I work around your baby.

Here’s how it works:

• We pencil in your due date

• Once your baby arrives, you let me know

• We then schedule the exact session date

Ideally, newborn sessions take place when your baby is between 5 and 21 days old. This window allows us to work gently, safely, and at your baby’s pace.

Why 5–21 Days Is the Ideal Time

During the first few weeks, babies are generally:

• sleepier

• curl more naturally

• happier being gently posed or wrapped

This is why many of the classic newborn images you see — soft, sleepy, peaceful — are created during this stage.

That said, there’s no “perfect” baby, and every session is baby-led. Some babies are wide awake, some love being wrapped, some prefer cuddles — and that’s all completely normal.

What If My Baby Arrives Early or Late?

This is one of the biggest worries parents have — and it’s exactly why booking during pregnancy is so helpful.

Because your session isn’t fixed to one date, it doesn’t matter if your baby arrives early or late.

Once your baby is here, we simply adjust and choose the best day for you and your baby.

This flexibility is built into the way I work.

What If I Book Late or After My Baby Is Born?

I do sometimes have short-notice availability, and I’m always happy to help if I can.

However, booking after your baby arrives can mean:

• limited availability

• fewer date options

• added stress when you’re already tired

From experience, parents who book during pregnancy almost always say the same thing afterwards:

“I’m so glad we had this booked already.”

What If My Baby Is Older Than 3 Weeks?

You haven’t “missed it”.

While younger babies are often sleepier, older newborns can still have beautiful sessions — they just look a little different.

With older babies:

• sessions may be more lifestyle-focused

• there may be fewer sleepy poses

• sessions can take a little longer

The result is still meaningful, connected, and completely worth having.

Does Timing Change for Lifestyle vs Studio-Style Sessions?

Yes, slightly.

Studio-style newborn sessions work best within that 5–21 day window

Lifestyle newborn sessions are more flexible and work well with older babies too

This is something we can talk through together when you enquire, so you feel confident choosing what suits your family best.

The Biggest Timing Mistake I See

The most common mistake I see is either:

waiting until the baby arrives to think about photos

or assuming it’s “too late” if a few weeks have passed

Both are completely understandable — but often unnecessary.

A quick message is always worth sending.

My Honest Advice to Expecting Parents

If you’re reading this while pregnant and feeling unsure, overwhelmed, or thinking “I’ll deal with this later” — here’s what I want you to know:

Booking your newborn session early doesn’t add pressure.

It actually takes something off your plate.

It means that when your baby arrives, you can simply settle in, recover, and enjoy those early days — knowing the photos are already taken care of.

And years from now, when you look back at those images, you’ll be so glad you did.
