When Should You Book Your Newborn Photography Session?
If you're expecting a baby, you've probably already started making a long list of things to organise. The cot, the pram, tiny sleepsuits folded neatly into drawers... and then someone mentions newborn photos.
Your first thought is usually...
"I'll sort that once the baby is here."
And honestly, that makes complete sense.
But here's something many parents don't realise...
The best time to book your newborn photography session isn't after your baby arrives—it's actually during pregnancy.
Don't worry though, that doesn't mean we choose an exact date months in advance. Babies have their own timetable!
So, when should you book?
I always recommend getting in touch after your 20-week scan.
At this stage, most parents have started sharing the exciting news with family and friends, the pregnancy feels a little more real, and it's the perfect time to think ahead.
When you book with me, I simply pencil your due date into my diary. Once your little one arrives, you send me a message, and together we'll arrange your session within those precious first few weeks.
It's simple, flexible, and takes one thing off your ever-growing to-do list.
Why are the first few weeks so special?
Those early newborn days are unlike any other.
Tiny fingers wrapped around yours.
Soft little stretches.
Sleepy cuddles on your chest.
The way your baby naturally curls up, just as they did in your tummy.
These tiny details change so much quicker than most parents expect.
That's why newborn sessions are usually photographed when babies are between 7 and 21 days old. During this time they're often sleepier and more settled, making it easier to gently capture those beautifully curled, peaceful poses.
But here's something I always tell parents...
Please don't panic if your baby is older.
I've photographed beautiful newborn portraits of babies who were several weeks old. Every baby is different, and every session is led by them—not by the clock.
What happens if my baby arrives early or late?
This is probably the question I get asked the most.
The answer is...
Nothing to worry about!
Babies rarely arrive exactly on their due date.
That's why I never book your session for a fixed day months in advance.
Instead, I reserve space around your due date. Once your baby arrives, simply send me a quick message and we'll arrange a date that works for everyone.
It's a relaxed process because becoming parents is exciting enough without worrying about calendars.
What if I've already had my baby?
First of all...
Congratulations!
Secondly...
Please don't think you've missed your chance.
While those classic sleepy newborn portraits are usually easiest in the first few weeks, older babies are wonderful too.
Wide awake eyes.
Little smiles.
Curious expressions.
Tiny stretches.
Every stage tells part of your baby's story, and I'd much rather create beautiful memories now than have you regret not booking at all.

If they need a little extra settling, that's absolutely fine too.

How old should my baby be?
Ideally between 7–21 days, but older babies are always welcome.
Do I need to bring wraps or outfits?
No.
I provide a carefully chosen collection of wraps, outfits, headbands and props, so you only need to bring your baby and the usual feeding essentials.
Can parents and siblings join?
Absolutely.
Family photographs are included in my Full Newborn Session and are often the images that become favourites.
What if my baby cries?
That's completely normal.
Newborn sessions are baby-led, with plenty of time for feeding, cuddles and settling.
