You’re pregnant (congratulations!) and thinking about maternity photos… but then comes the question:
“When’s the right time to do them?”
You want to have that beautiful bump, but you also want to feel comfortable enough to move around, pose naturally, and actually enjoy the experience.
Here’s my guide — as a maternity photographer in Clitheroe, Lancashire — to choosing the perfect time for your shoot so you’ll look and feel your best.
The Sweet Spot: 28–34 Weeks
For most mums-to-be, the best time for maternity photos is between 28 and 34 weeks of pregnancy.
By this stage:
Your bump is beautifully round and showing well in photos.
You still have enough energy to move, walk, and try different poses comfortably.
Most swelling hasn’t fully set in yet (for many mums).
This is when you’ll get that classic maternity glow without feeling too close to your due date.
Why Not Wait Until the Very End?
A lot of mums say, “I’ll wait until I’m almost due so my bump is the biggest.”
But here’s the thing… those final weeks can be tough.
You might feel more tired and less mobile.
Baby could arrive early (and then we’ve missed our chance).
You may not want to be on your feet for a full session.
I’ve photographed mums right up until 39 weeks, and while it’s doable, I recommend planning earlier so the experience feels relaxed and enjoyable.
If You’re Expecting Multiples
For twins or more, we usually aim for a little earlier — around 26–30 weeks. Your bump will show sooner, and this timing avoids the extra discomfort or early arrivals that can sometimes happen.
What If I’ve Already Passed 34 Weeks?
Don’t worry — it’s not too late!
I’ve done stunning maternity sessions at 36+ weeks. The main thing is to work with how you’re feeling. We can choose gentler poses, stay close to home, or even have an in-home session if that feels easier.
Booking Tip: Plan Ahead
Photographers often book up months in advance, especially for outdoor shoots in spring and summer. If you’re in Clitheroe or anywhere in Lancashire and want maternity photos, the best time to book is as soon as you’ve had your 20-week scan.
That way, we can secure your date in that perfect 28–34 week window.
So, When’s the Right Time for You?
It’s about more than just weeks and dates.
It’s about finding a moment when you feel well, confident, and ready to celebrate the season you’re in.
Because these photos aren’t just for now — they’re for years from now, when you’ll look back and remember exactly how it felt to be waiting for your baby.
