When Can Babies Sit for Photos? The Perfect Age for Milestone Photography

One of the most common questions parents ask is: when is the best age to photograph my baby after the newborn stage?

The answer is often a wonderful stage known as the “sitter stage”, usually between 6 and 9 months old. This is one of my absolute favourite ages to photograph because babies are full of personality, curious about the world, and often able to sit independently but not yet crawling away.

These sessions beautifully capture your baby’s growing character and the little details that change so quickly during the first year.

At my Clitheroe studio in the Ribble Valley, Lancashire, sitter sessions are designed to feel relaxed, simple, and focused entirely on your baby.

Why 6–9 Months Is the Perfect Age for Baby Photos

Around six months, many babies reach an exciting milestone — they can sit up by themselves. This opens up so many possibilities for natural, expressive portraits.

At this age babies often:

• Sit independently

• Smile and laugh easily

• Show lots of personality

• Interact with their surroundings

• Stay in one place (before crawling begins!)

Once babies start crawling and walking, they become much more mobile, which can make simple portraits a little more challenging. That’s why the 6–9 month window is such a sweet spot for milestone photography.

These sessions capture your baby exactly as they are in this moment — chubby legs, curious expressions, and those joyful giggles parents never want to forget.

A Calm and Natural Approach to Sitter Sessions

My approach to milestone photography is always simple, timeless and baby-led.

Rather than complicated setups or bright props, I use minimal styling and soft, natural colours so the focus stays on your baby.

Sessions take place in my cosy Clitheroe studio and typically last up to one hour, allowing plenty of time for your little one to settle and enjoy the experience.

During the session we usually include:

• Two simple backdrops

• A small selection of timeless props such as baskets or stools

• Outfit changes if you’d like variety

• Natural posing with gentle guidance

The goal is to create images that feel calm, beautiful and timeless, so you’ll still love them many years from now.

Can Parents Be in the Photos Too?

Absolutely.

Although sitter sessions focus mainly on your baby, parents are always welcome to join for a few photographs together. These images often become some of the most meaningful — capturing the connection between you and your little one during this special stage of life.

Many families love having one or two simple parent-and-baby portraits alongside the milestone images.

When Should You Book a Sitter Session?

Because the ideal window is 6–9 months, I usually recommend booking your sitter session around one month in advance.

This gives us time to find a date when your baby is sitting comfortably but before they begin crawling or walking.

If your baby is already sitting and you’re thinking about milestone photos, it’s a lovely time to capture this stage before the next big changes arrive.

What Happens After Your Session

After the session, I carefully edit each image to keep the soft, natural style my work is known for.

You’ll receive a private online gallery where you can view your photographs and download your images. Your gallery will also include access to a professional print shop if you’d like to order prints, albums or wall art.

Milestone sessions include 20 beautifully edited colour images, along with black and white versions of the same photographs.

Capturing the First Year

Your baby’s first year is full of incredible changes. One moment they’re tiny newborns, and before you know it they’re sitting, laughing and exploring the world around them.

Sitter sessions are a wonderful way to pause for a moment and capture this stage — before those first steps arrive.

If you’re looking for milestone photography in Lancashire, I’d love to help you document these memories in a calm, natural way.
