What to Expect at a Newborn Photography Shoot
What to Expect at a Newborn Photography Shoot
If you’re expecting a baby (or already holding one in your arms), it’s completely normal to feel a bit unsure about newborn photos.
You might be wondering:
How long will it take?
What if my baby cries?
What am I meant to do?
What if everything doesn’t go to plan?
So let me talk you through exactly what to expect at a newborn photography session with me, based on years of experience and many, many babies photographed.
How Long Does a Newborn Session Last?
I offer two types of newborn sessions, so you can choose what suits you best:
Mini newborn sessions last around 1–1.5 hours.
These are perfect if you:
- don’t want to stay too long
- have a clear idea of the style you like
- just want a small selection of beautiful images
Full newborn sessions usually last 2–4 hours.
These are completely baby-led, which means we take as long as your baby needs — whether that’s feeding, settling, or cuddling.
I never rush a baby. And I never book newborn sessions back-to-back, so there’s no pressure on time.
What Happens When You Arrive (or When I Arrive at Your Home)?
The very first thing we do is… slow down.
We sit down, have a chat, and I’ll offer you a tea or coffee. I’ll show you where the toilet is, talk you through the space, and make sure you feel comfortable.
Then I’ll:
- show you the colours, wraps, and props
- talk through the plan for the session
- explain that we usually start with baby on the posing bag, then move to props, and finish with family photos
If you have siblings, we often photograph them at the beginning, while they’re fresh and happy — but we’ll always decide together what feels best.
Feeding, Changing & Breaks (This Is the Big One)
Before we start, I’ll ask:
- when baby was last fed
- whether they’re breastfed or bottle-fed
If you’re breastfeeding, we simply allow extra time and breaks. If you’d prefer privacy, I can step out of the studio, or you can use a covered area — whatever makes you feel most comfortable.
When baby feeds, we pause.
There’s no clock watching.
I usually keep things relaxed by chatting — about your holidays, how you met, or what you do — just normal conversation so the whole experience feels easy.
Do I Need to Prepare Anything?
No — and that’s very much on purpose.
Before your session, I send you a full preparation guide covering:
- what to bring
- what to wear
- what to expect
On the day, you don’t need to “do” anything right. I guide everything gently and clearly.
What Is My Role During the Session?
Your job is very simple:
Relax. Step back. Breathe.
I’ll guide you when I need your help, and otherwise you can just enjoy watching your baby being photographed.
How Do You Keep My Baby Safe?
Baby safety is always my top priority.
I’m trained in newborn safety, I never leave a baby unattended, and I’m always watching baby’s comfort, temperature, and positioning.
If I ever need to step away — even for a moment — I’ll always ask a parent to stay right by baby.
Nothing is forced. Nothing is rushed. If a pose doesn’t feel right for your baby, we simply don’t do it.
What If My Baby Cries or Won’t Sleep?
That’s completely normal.
If baby is unsettled, we slow down. Sometimes wrapping helps calm babies, and I often use this if a baby needs extra comfort.
Because I don’t schedule newborn sessions on the same day, we can take as long as it takes.
Some babies sleep deeply, some stay awake, some need lots of cuddles — all of it is okay.
What About Siblings and Pets?
If you have siblings, we usually photograph them first if you feel that’s a good idea.
If they need a break, one parent can take them for a walk — I’m lucky to have a river behind my house and a park just five minutes away, which really helps.
This keeps the session calm and enjoyable for everyone.
How Do Parents Usually Feel Afterwards?
The most common thing parents say is:
“That was so much more relaxed than I expected.”
They’re happy they did it.
Relieved they booked it.
And glad they didn’t cancel or put it off.
If You’re Feeling Nervous…
Here’s what I want you to know:
There is no wrong way to do a newborn session.
Your baby doesn’t need to behave a certain way.
You don’t need to look or feel a certain way.
One day, these photos will matter more than you can imagine — and you’ll be so glad you captured this season, exactly as it was.
Ready to Chat or Book Your Newborn Session?
If you’re expecting a baby and wondering whether a newborn session is right for you — or you just want to ask a few questions first — I’d love to hear from you.
There’s no pressure to book straight away.
Sometimes a quick chat is all you need to feel confident and calm about the next steps.
Whether you’re interested in a mini session, a full baby-led session, or you’re not quite sure yet, I’m here to guide you.
