You’ve booked your newborn session (or you’re thinking about it)… and then the next question hits:
“What colours should we go for?”
You’re not alone — so many parents ask this, and the truth is, it really does make a difference.
The colours you choose can shape the entire mood of your photos, how timeless they feel, and even how calm the session is for baby.
But don’t worry — you don’t need to know anything about colour theory.
I’m here to guide you through what works, what photographs beautifully, and how to choose tones that feel right for your family.
1. Go for Soft, Neutral Tones
Creams, whites, beige, warm greys, soft browns — these tones never go out of style. They’re gentle, calming and put all the focus on your baby’s skin, features and connection.
They also photograph beautifully in both in-home lifestyle sessions and studio-style shoots.
Neutrals are especially great if you’re unsure — they’ll always give you that classic, peaceful look.
2. Keep It Simple — Less Is More
This isn’t the time to bring in bold colours, logos or distracting patterns.
Especially in newborn sessions, the emotion is already there — we don’t need loud colours to tell the story.
Whether it’s wraps, blankets, outfits or what you wear yourself, stick to a simple, cohesive palette.
Think:
One base neutral (like cream or beige)
One soft accent (dusty pink, sage green, soft blue)
Natural textures (knits, linens, lace)
This helps keep the focus on the connection — not the clothes.

Consider Your Home (for Lifestyle Sessions)
If your session is happening at home, think about the colours already in your space.
Light walls? Soft tones will blend beautifully.
Darker tones or bolder decor? We can either work with contrast or lean into deeper neutrals like oatmeal, mocha or warm grey.
We want your photos to feel like they belong in your home — so if you’re planning to frame or print them, choose tones that will complement your space naturally.

4. What About the Baby’s Wraps and Outfits?
Don’t stress — I bring a carefully curated selection of wraps, blankets and accessories in neutral tones that photograph beautifully on every baby.
If you have something sentimental (like a knitted blanket or a special outfit), let’s include it — but I’ll always guide you to what works best on camera.
5. A Few Colours That Work Beautifully in Newborn Sessions:
- Soft whites and ivory
- Warm beige and oatmeal
- Dusty pinks and mauves
- Sage green
- Soft greys
- Muted baby blue
- Warm terracotta tones (used carefully)
These colours work across skin tones, keep the mood calm, and ensure the images feel timeless — not trendy.
