More Than Baby Photographs: Why the Sitter Stage Deserves to Be Remembered
One day, your baby might sit beside you on the sofa, open an old photo album and ask:
“Mum, what did I look like when I was seven months old?”
They won’t remember this stage themselves. They won’t remember the way they smiled with their whole face, the funny little expressions they made when they were curious or how proud they looked when they had finally learned to sit independently.
But you will—and the photographs will help you show them.
I imagine those photographs being brought out on a quiet, cosy evening years from now. You’ll turn the pages together, smiling at the tiny details you had almost forgotten. There may be laughter, stories and perhaps even a little tear in the corner of your eye when you realise just how quickly that tiny baby grew.
This is the real reason we photograph these milestones.
What Is a Sitter Photography Session?
A sitter session is designed for babies who can sit independently but are not yet walking—usually at around 6–9 months old.
It is such a lovely stage to photograph because your baby’s personality is beginning to shine through. They are curious about everything, full of expressions and often much more comfortable interacting with the camera.
The session is relaxed and led by your baby. We allow time for little breaks, cuddles and changes of position, keeping the experience enjoyable rather than expecting your baby to perform or smile continuously.
Why Is 6–9 Months Such a Special Age?
During the newborn stage, we photograph the tiniest details: curled-up legs, delicate fingers and peaceful sleepy expressions. By the sitter stage, your baby has changed completely.
They may have chubby cheeks, little rolls, their first teeth and a smile you recognise instantly. They might clap, reach for their toes, wrinkle their nose or give me a very serious look before suddenly bursting into laughter.
These are the details that feel so familiar now but can quietly disappear as they grow.

More Than Something Pretty for Your Wall
A favourite portrait can look beautiful displayed in your baby’s bedroom, but its meaning will continue to grow.
Today, it is a photograph of your little one at seven months old. In five years, it reminds you how small they once were. In twenty years, it may be shown to their partner, included in a birthday display or passed around while everyone shares stories about their childhood.
The value of the photograph is not limited to the day it was taken. It becomes greater as time passes.
You are giving your child a visual record of a part of their life they were too young to remember—and showing them how loved they have always been.
What Happens During a Sitter Session?
Sitter sessions at my welcoming home studio in Clitheroe are kept simple and focused on your baby.
I use carefully selected colours, outfits and props that complement your little one without hiding their personality. We can create a mixture of timeless portraits, playful expressions and beautiful close-up details.
Parents can also join for a few photographs. You may not feel completely camera-ready, but your baby will one day love seeing how you held them, looked at them and made them smile.
You don’t need to worry about your baby behaving perfectly. Some babies smile immediately, while others need time to become comfortable. Every expression is part of who they are—including the serious and curious ones.
When Should I Book?
It is best to enquire when your baby is around five or six months old, or approximately one month before you would like the session to take place.
Your baby should be able to sit safely without being supported, but you don’t have to wait until they are crawling. If you are unsure whether your baby is ready, simply send me a message and I’ll be happy to advise you.
