You might be thinking this already…

“I don’t feel like myself right now.”

“I’ll wait until I feel better.”

“Maybe next time…”

And honestly — you’re not alone.

So many mums I photograph in my Clitheroe studio or outdoors around Lancashire say the exact same thing before their session.

There’s this idea that you need to feel completely confident, glowing, and put together to book maternity photos…

But the truth is — most don’t.

And that’s completely normal.

You don’t need to feel confident to book

Pregnancy can feel beautiful… but also overwhelming, uncomfortable, and unfamiliar.

Your body is changing quickly.

You might feel tired.

Nothing fits quite right.

So the thought of stepping in front of a camera?

It can feel like a lot.

But here’s what I always gently remind my clients:

👉 You’re not booking photos because everything feels perfect

👉 You’re booking them because this moment won’t come back

This stage — carrying your baby, feeling those little movements, being right on the edge of meeting them — it passes so quickly.

And it deserves to be remembered.

What a maternity session actually feels like

Whether we shoot in my Clitheroe studio or outdoors somewhere quiet in Lancashire, the focus is always the same:

calm   relaxed    no pressure

We take things slowly.

We chat, move gently, and find natural moments — nothing forced or uncomfortable.

You don’t need to know how to pose.

You don’t need to feel “camera ready”.

I guide you softly the whole way, so you can just be present.

Outdoor vs studio — what’s right for you?

Some mums love the idea of being outdoors.

Soft natural light, open space, and a more relaxed feel — especially lovely if you’re bringing your partner or children along.

Outdoor maternity sessions in Lancashire can feel less “posed” and more like a moment in time.

Others prefer the simplicity of the studio.

Neutral backdrops, soft tones, and a more timeless, minimal look that keeps all the focus on you and your baby.

And honestly?

There’s no right or wrong.

Some of my clients even choose to do a little of both — starting in the studio, then heading outside for a different feel.

It’s all about what feels comfortable for you.

What to wear (without overthinking it)

This is one of the biggest worries I hear.

But it really doesn’t need to be complicated.

Simple, soft, neutral outfits always work beautifully.

Think:

flowy dresses

soft knits

pieces that feel comfortable and natural

You don’t need anything tight or overly styled.

And I’m always happy to guide you before your session so you feel prepared.

When should you book?

The best time for maternity photos is usually between 28–34 weeks.

Your bump is beautifully visible, but you’re (hopefully!) still feeling comfortable enough to enjoy the experience.

And just like newborn sessions, maternity bookings can fill up quickly — especially during busier months.

You might not feel ready… but you’ll never regret it

Nearly every mum says something similar before their session:

“I almost didn’t book this…”

And afterwards?

It becomes something they’re so glad they did.

Not because everything was perfect.

But because it was real.

Because it captured a moment that doesn’t last.
