And what you’re really paying for

If you’re pregnant (or you’ve just had your baby) and you’re looking at newborn photography prices, it can feel a bit confusing.

You might see a huge mix of prices and wonder what the difference actually is. Is it just the number of photos? The length of the session? The style? And most importantly… is it worth it?

I’m a newborn photographer based in Clitheroe, photographing families across Lancashire and the Ribble Valley, and I want to explain this in a simple, honest way — without making it awkward or salesy.

Because newborn photos should feel like a calm, safe experience… not something you stress about.

Newborn photography isn’t “just taking pictures”

A newborn session is very different to a quick family shoot.

It’s slower, gentler, and designed around a tiny person who needs feeding, settling, changing, and cuddling along the way. Even when a session looks calm (and it should), there’s a lot happening behind the scenes to keep your baby comfortable and safe.

When you pay for newborn photography, you’re not only paying for the time I’m taking photos — you’re paying for the full experience and everything that supports it.

What you’re really paying for in a newborn session

1) Safety and specialist handling

This is the biggest one.

Newborns need to be photographed carefully. Posing and handling should always be gentle, and your baby should never be left unsupported. A calm newborn session isn’t an “accident” — it comes from training, experience, and knowing how to read babies.

Parents often tell me how reassured they felt during the session, and that matters. You deserve to feel confident that your baby is in safe hands.

2) Time (and flexibility)

Newborn sessions can’t be rushed.

If your baby needs feeding, we stop. If they need settling, we slow down. If they’re wide awake, we work with that. You’re not booking a strict timetable — you’re booking time, patience, and someone who expects babies to act like babies.

3) Professional editing

A big part of what you’re paying for happens after the session.

Each gallery takes careful editing to create a soft, timeless finish, with attention to little details so the images feel clean and consistent — not overdone or rushed. This is where the “quality” really shows.

4) Everything that’s provided for you

Props, wraps, styling, a warm calm environment — all of that is part of the service. Most parents don’t want to buy outfits or figure out colours and textures while they’re pregnant or newly postpartum. The point is that it’s already taken care of.

5) The images you’ll keep forever

This part is hard to explain until you’re living it.

Newborn days disappear quickly. The photos become proof of how small they were, how they fit in your arms, what those early days felt like. The value isn’t just in the images — it’s in what they help you remember.

“If your prices are reasonable, does that mean lower quality?”

Not at all.

A higher price doesn’t automatically mean better, and a reasonable price doesn’t mean the photographer is inexperienced or cutting corners.

Some photographers price higher because of studio overheads, a large team, or a luxury sales process. Others (like me) choose to keep things more approachable because they genuinely want newborn photography to feel achievable for families — without losing quality, care, or safety.

My focus is simple:

high-quality newborn photography without the pressure of premium pricing.

My newborn session pricing (simple and clear)

I keep my newborn options straightforward:

Baby-Only Newborn Session (Studio) – £150

A short, classic baby-only session with 10 edited images plus 5 detail images.

Full Newborn Session (Studio) – £250

A calm, unhurried session that includes family portraits, 20 edited images plus 10 detail images, and black & white versions included.

(And if you’re not sure which fits best, that’s completely normal — most parents decide after a quick chat.)

If you’re feeling anxious about cost…

If you’re reading this and thinking, “I want these photos, but I’m worried about spending money,” you’re not alone.

My advice is to choose a photographer you trust — someone whose work you love, but also someone who makes you feel safe and looked after. Because the session experience matters just as much as the final images.

If you’d like to ask a question, check availability, or talk through which session would suit you best, just get in touch. No pressure — I’m always happy to chat.
