Bringing your toddler to your newborn photoshoot? Here’s what to expect
If you’re expecting a new baby and already have a little one at home, you’ve probably had this thought…
“How on earth is this going to work with my toddler?”
You might be worrying they won’t sit still, won’t listen, or that the whole experience will feel stressful instead of enjoyable.
I promise you — you’re not the only one thinking this.
And the good news? It really can work beautifully.
It’s completely normal to feel unsure
Bringing a toddler to a newborn photoshoot can feel like a big unknown, especially when you’re already adjusting to life with a new baby.
Toddlers are unpredictable, full of energy, and not always interested in sitting nicely for photos — and that’s absolutely okay.
My sessions are designed with that in mind.
There’s no expectation for your child to be “perfect” — we simply work around them.

How newborn sessions with siblings usually work
When you book a newborn photography session in Clitheroe , I always plan things to feel as relaxed and easy as possible.
Sibling photos are usually done at the very beginning of the session.
This means:
- your toddler doesn’t need to sit around waiting
- we capture those important family moments straight away
- they’re free to relax (or head home) afterwards
The rest of the session then focuses on your baby, in a calm and peaceful environment.
A few simple ways to make it easier
You don’t need to overthink it, but a little preparation can make a big difference.
Here are a few gentle tips:
- Plan around nap time
Try to avoid bringing your toddler when they’re tired — a well-rested child is always happier.
- Let me know their routine
Don’t be shy about sharing nap times, personalities, or anything you’re worried about — it helps me guide the session better.
- Bring snacks and a favourite toy
Familiar things can be really comforting and help keep them engaged.
- Keep expectations low
Some of the most beautiful moments happen naturally — not when everything is perfectly posed.

You don’t need to worry about behaviour
This is probably the biggest concern I hear:
“What if my toddler doesn’t behave?”
Honestly — I never expect them to.
I’ve worked with so many families, and every child is different. Some are shy, some are full of energy, some just want a cuddle.
That’s all completely normal.
I gently guide everything in a calm, patient way, so nothing ever feels forced or stressful.
It’s always worth including them
Even if it feels a little chaotic in the moment, these photos become so meaningful.
Capturing that connection between your children — those early bonds, tiny hands, and real interactions — is something you’ll never regret.
